Monkey Grip, 2023, powdercoated copper, 340 x 5 x 0.2cm

Monkey Grip is a hand-made copper chain of S-links that when hung from the ceiling, appear as though the links are being pulled from both ends by an invisible force. The 's' shape is taken from my own handwriting, and the letter ‘S’ symbolises entropy in physics. Entropy is the principle that the universe moves from a state of order to chaos - never the other way around. Monkey Grip ruminates on invisible, universal forces and attempts to make them visible/legible. The links are powdercoated a Biro-pen blue: very dark when in shadow and strikingly pigmented when lit.

Loop study (silk), 2023, silk tapestry, 20 x 15cm

Loop study (silk) is a transcription of a quick line drawing into the slow and intentional process of tapestry weaving. I am interested in extrapolations on pace and time in my practice, and Loop study (silk) is an experiment in combining a conflicting pace of line.  I like to think of the process of weaving the original drawing as creating a work with a new temporal structure. I am interested in how ancient weaving techniques can provide new models for considering time, pace and duration.
